Recognizing His Visionary Leadership
Henrik Blum was an inspiring colleague, a dedicated teacher and a community health care pioneer who linked health care with economics, housing, employment, education and culture. He challenged UC Berkeley students to think broadly, delivered health care to underserved communities in Contra Costa County, and recognized the need to improve the community in order to improve public health. Henrik Blum’s ideas—once considered ahead of their time—are now the standard.
Putting His Vision Into Practice
Since 1976, LifeLong has been at the forefront of providing comprehensive care—prevention, medical, dental and mental health care, and chronic care—where people need it most. Dr. Blum was committed to LifeLong Medical Care, serving on the board of directors and chairing the groundbreaking Over 60 Capital Campaign that transformed complex services for elders.
Health care delivery undergoes national transformation
Henrik Blum’s work has a new urgency. Federal health care reform will soon move 35 million people out of emergency rooms into comprehensive Community Health Centers like the one that LifeLong Medical Care operates at West Berkeley. Each year, more than 22,000 people from infants to the elderly make more than 170,000 visits to LifeLong for vital services. For many whose needs have been neglected by the health care system, LifeLong has been a lifesaver.
