BERKELEY, CA - Susan Ferguson, MS, MD, LifeLong Medical Care’s Associate Medical Director, is the recipient of Western Clinicians Network’s (WCN) Clinical Excellence Award.
Each year WCN recognizes an outstanding clinician who throughout his or her career has demonstrated clinical excellence in their endeavors.
WCN, peers, and the community are recognizing Dr. Ferguson for demonstrating professionalism, commitment, and passion for the quality of care for the underserved.
For the past 12 years she has worked at LifeLong Medical Care's array of clinics and field sites in Oakland. Double-boarded in internal medicine and addiction medicine, Dr. Ferguson is the medical director of LifeLong's Downtown Oakland Clinic and Supportive Housing Program.
She provides care to an extremely high-risk population, many of whom are homeless or at-risk for homelessness, with multiple medical and co-existing behavioral health conditions.
For the past three years she has also been the medical director of Downtown Oakland Clinic, where she provides medical leadership to a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and behavioral health providers.
Along with her work at the clinic, Dr. Ferguson provides primary care services at a handful of Supportive Housing sites, which are usually hotels that have been remodeled to accommodate people who have been homeless.
Dr. Ferguson received her medical degree from the Joint Medical Program at University of California at Berkeley and University of California at San Francisco. Prior to attending medical school, she worked as a science writer and disability rights lobbyist in the State Legislature in Sacramento. She also worked with public health research coordination at the State Department of Health Services.
